Tour Overview
Marangu route also known as 'Coca-Cola' route is the most popular thus a high-traffic route on Kilimanjaro. It is the only non-camping route on Kilimanjaro where trekkers sleep in dormitory-like huts. Marangu is mistakenly considered as the easiest route and due to this reputation, it is often selected by many unprepared and inexperienced trekkers. As a result, only a migre 35% of climbers using this route actually make it to the summit at Uhuru peak. Scenically, Marangu route has great views of the rainforest, Mawenzi peak, and the landscape below as well as the magnificent vista from the summit.
Marangu route is ideal for those who are not confident in their ability to hike over steeper paths and are not comfortable sleeping under a tent. The route takes five days minimum to complete, although six days is more practical and recommended.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi – Gateway to Kilimanjaro
Arrive in Moshi, a bustling Tanzanian town nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel, where you’ll meet your mountain guides for a detailed briefing and gear check. Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing by the pool, strolling local markets, or soaking in views of the majestic peak you’re about to conquer. A hearty dinner and a good night’s sleep await—you begin the adventure tomorrow.
Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate, the starting point of your climb. Complete registration with the park authorities before beginning your trek through lush montane rainforest. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife as you ascend. After about 4–5 hours of hiking, arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Enjoy dinner and settle in for your first night on the mountain.
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Today’s trek takes you beyond the rainforest into moorland terrain, with open views and a cooler climate. Hike past volcanic formations and giant heather, gradually gaining altitude. After 5–6 hours of trekking, reach Horombo Hut, where you’ll rest, rehydrate, and enjoy breathtaking views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Warm meals and camaraderie with fellow climbers make the evening cozy and uplifting.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
A vital acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the altitude. Take a short hike to the Mawenzi Ridge (4,300m) or Zebra Rocks for stunning views and a taste of higher elevation. This active rest helps improve your summit chances. Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing, journaling, or enjoying the surreal alpine landscape.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
The landscape changes again as you enter the stark, lunar-like saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The 5–6 hour trek is dry and dramatic, offering striking views of the peak ahead. Arrive at Kibo Hut, nestled at the base of the summit cone. After an early dinner and briefing, rest up—summit night begins before midnight.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Summit & Return to Horombo Hut
Just after midnight, begin your final ascent under a star-lit sky. With headlamps lighting the way, ascend slowly via Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Push onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, reaching the summit around sunrise—an unforgettable moment. After photos and celebrations, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved night of sleep. This is the most challenging yet rewarding day, totaling 12–14 hours of trekking.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Celebration & Departure
After breakfast, begin your final descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you'll sign out of the park and receive your summit certificate. Say goodbye to your guides and porters—the true heroes of your climb. Return to Moshi for a shower, celebratory lunch, and some relaxation before your transfer to the airport or hotel. You leave with a deep sense of achievement and memories etched at the roof of Africa—Mamu Travels’ Kilimanjaro experience: bold, beautiful, and unforgettable.
